red-tags asked: How can you sex goldfish?
There are many ways, but first you want to make sure the fish is old enough in order to be accurate. It can vary from fish to fish but when they’re around 6 months and about 4” in length, their sex will be relatively easy to identify.
- The most obvious way is breeding stars/tubercles on male fish. They are white nodules that look like spots, usually appearing on the fish’s operculum/gill plate and the leading ray of the pectoral fins. They can also be all over the face (eyes, cheeks, etc.), and can even appear on the scales. Some people mistaken them for ich, but the spots that are breeding stars will be larger. Sometimes when in the presence of a female that is ready to breed, younger males, less than 6 months of age, can develop breeding stars too.
- Males have thicker pectoral fins than female
- Females have rounder bodies
- Vents. Females will have “outie” vents that stick out
The TARDIS as seen on the first episode of Doctor Who, 1963.
